In March 1942 Arnold Schönberg received a letter from the League of Composers to compose a new work on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the association. He accepted: “My piece will be a melodram, for piano, string quartet and recitation […]. The poem of my composition is by Lord Byron and has much relation to present days feelings.“ Schönberg wanted to address the crimes and human upheavals of the time, which he had been forced to experience in Europe at first hand as a Jewish émigré. The rows, which have been expanded by variants into flexibly usable groups of six tones, span a network of references across the work. Among these, the “Washington“ motif stands out in particular, which Schönberg already envisages in the draft of the speaking part for the passage “the living great.“
